The Red&Blue Chair designed in 1917-1918 was at the forefront of the experiments undertaken by members of the Dutch-based De Stijl movement. The group sought to instill Neoplatonic thought into design, creating ultimate objects that expressed the perfection and spiritual harmony of geometry and primary colour. The chair was originally painted in the typical De Stijl palette of grey, black and white, but in 1918 Reitveld repainted it in red, blue, yellow and black to echo the paintings of fellow De Stijl member Peit Mondrian.
